What is Ethical Hacking?

Ethical Hacking as the name suggests is Hacking into a client's computer and computer networks to show them where the vulnerabilities and problems are so that they can fix them before the actual hackers can use them. Ethical Hacking is also called Penetration Testing or Pen Testing and is an exciting way of actually doing hacking but getting paid legally rather than illegally.

The best part of Ethical Hacking is that it is considered a fun job and as a talented Hacker you could hack into any company's network and help them fix a potential problem they might have. Or use it as a prank on a friend whose wifi password you could change.

As Hackers across the world are becoming more and more common, Companies across the world are engaging with Ethical Hackers to protect their systems from Hacking. A few recent examples of how hackers have hacked into the company's accounts and the havoc they have created.

One large Plastic product manufacturing company's ERP system was hacked when a user clicked on a link to play a video game. The whole company's ERP was locked and the Hacker had access to all the data and asked them for Rs 15 Crore Rs to give them access to their systems. After 3 days of negotiation, the hackers agreed to Rs 2 Crore and gave the system access back to the company. For 3 days the whole company was at a standstill while they were waiting for the negotiations to be completed. One of our students had approached this company and done a free test and had informed them about various vulnerabilities and quoted them Rs 6,00,000 for a full report but the company had declined to say it’s not required.

A large eCommerce Company's client and transaction data were hacked and the hackers sold the data in the market for small amounts of $50 for 1000 names with their phone numbers and the last 4 digits of their credit cards. Large telecaller teams have been calling users acting as Banks and hacking into the user's accounts and transferring the balances. It is estimated that over 12,000 Crores have been siphoned from users' bank accounts in the last 15 months.

What do Ethical Hackers do?

Ethical Hackers normally define the scope of activities they will be involved with, they might be assigned the whole company's network or just a few computers. It really depends on how much the client believes they are at risk. Once the mandate is provided the Ethical Hacker will do a survey of the client their IP addresses, network configuration, Application, Website addresses, Server Configuration, and SQL/ Database Configuration. Furthermore when and what dates will the tests be done is also confirmed so as to limit downtime of a live environment.
